Subject: Rumors....
I have heard it rumored that I am "out of
telecom"... I wish to say that
that is most definitely NOT true, I am not out of telecom.
It is merely that my life outside of telecom (yes, there is
such a thing) has
been busy as hell lately, and I've been unable to be home (alone)
enough to
use the computer. Mayhaps at some point in the future I will
have more free
time (and then again....) and will call more often.
However, until that point, I will continue to call
sporadically at best.
This is not saying that I'm forgetting all of you guys, and I'll still
welcome
phone calls (if I'm home, which is doubtful).
So, that little point of business concluded, I'm going to
eat supper. I'll
be talking to y'all later...

I am sad to say that around noon-ish today, we
lost a dear friend.
A friend that has faithfully stood by us for several months now, is now
gone.
Yes, today the old NETWORK XXIII was...

...flatlined.
But, as the complications set in, and we were sure
that all would be lost,
the NETWORK said with its last breath, "I will return."
And so, just hours after its demise, NETWORK XXIII
rose like a phoenix from
the ashes! It is reborn, and, although we have lost the old
NETWORK, its
memory will last forever in our minds (though it didn't on the
disks). We've
done it before, and we can do it again! It's the same old BBS
(with a few new
subs), and SPAM brand luncheon meat will still be awarded to those
writing
every thousandth message.

I've never actually played "Call...", but I think
you'll have your hands
full with the D&D sub. Are you going to write a
module specifically for the
Board??? I would advise it since, as Derec mentioned, if you
concentrate more
on storyline than combat the playing (at least via telecom) goes much
more
smoothly. Unless you can find a prepared module with little
combat and more
in the way of plot. But there's always the chance that one of the
players has
that module, and you may find yourself with one guy who always knows
where to
go!!!

Kidnapping is something else... I always love reading the old

I also like hearing about the stories of long thin needles being pushed

I think it all depends on the situation. If you are in the midst of a
group of
(quasi) intelligent people, then mucous is the way to go. If, ont he
other
hand, you are amongst friends, or Harley Bikers, then
snot would be more
appropriate. In addition, if you have a cold, and you sneeze,
and a clearish
liquid is forcefully ejected from your nostrils and blows
down into your
moustache or mouth, making you look like a silly messy-face, then that
is
definitely SNOT !
In contrast, if you have an itch deep in the nasal cavity, and you
stuff your
finger up your nose to scratch it, and upon withrawing said finger from
said
nose one finds little green hard chunks under one's fingernail, then
that is
undoubtedly nasal mucous.
I hope this clears up the mystery.

Subject: I write a Question - Reply to # 125
The humans apporoached their Messiah and asked, regarding the afflicted
human
in their midst, "who is responible for his discomfort in this
life? Is the
Creator punishing his parents for their sins through him? Or
is He punishing
the man for great sins he has yet to commit?"
The Messiah said "Lo" (no) to both of the possibilities...
If such is the case, as the Messiah so stated, then is it logical.....
Is it logical, consistant, and just, for Creator to punish the Children
of Adam
und Eve for their sins so long ago? We bare the burden, the
punishment for
their actions that took place so long ago... We work upon the
Earth to
produce a survivable planet. Our lives are substantially
shortened from their
natural possibility. Our women suffer in
childbirth. We are burdened with
pests, parrasites, and other unproductive creations. We live
in a dying world
due to the sin of our Parents.
This Sin is powerful we have a sole name for it: Original Sin
"Test everything. Prove everything. For the Light
is The Truth."
Well? Is God inconsistant? ("I am an unchanging god, " he
says) Is he a liar?
What of it...
Philip, defend yor god!

A private reply will be sufficient. The way to
generate characters is to
roll four six-sided dice and ignoring the lowest roll. That way you get
a
number from 3 to 18. If a character has no stats lower than 15, I begin
to get
suspicious. Actually, I have rolled a character with four 18's once!
Lucky

Such accounts are easily found in the records of the times.
And it doesn't take a concerted effort either. I just have a
good memory for
these things, as i do for anything that brings about strong emotions,
be they
positive or negative. In this case, negative.
And, believe me, i have expressed some of the positives here before,

far less response...

What are the reasons men have for creating nuclear weapons?
To survive a war
(as in WWII), or to deter a war. You may or may not believe
these to be truly
effective in the long or short term, but the fact of the matter is, is
that
these are the true reasons the men your ancestors elected to power hold
in
creating such weapons.
The question isn't whether they will indeed fulfill their purpose, but
what the
purpose is.
And, as i said, the purpose is to maintain a survivable world,
regardless of
its utlimate legtimacy.

Haha... Well, during my six month hiatus i spent only two on
kibbutz Dafna
(conviently located 3 kilometers from the S.Lebanese Security Zone), the
remainder of my time i spent in the West Bank, for specifically
Jerusalem.
The Palastinian rioters you see on the tele are hardly politically
motivated.
Does a black kid from the ghetto of NYC who likes break dancing, rap
music,
and stolls on the subtransit with his boombox at 10+ vol mug, throw
stones at
police vehicles for political purposes?
And that black kid is undoubtedly far more educated than any of those
brats in
the villages of the West Bank.
I say, treat them like the brats and thugs they are. Most
Arabs in Israel do
not support such actions. Most Arabs, as most Jews, have a
better sense of
reality than that.

Ok, so I'm replying privately, while for some reason derec

hehe. By
the way, do you have a seperate sub labeled 'AD&D' like the
'D&D' sub or do we
just play both at once? And by the way, noticing that on the list of
subs,
it's alphabetical, but I don't have an 'N' choice.. Can you just tell
me the
title of 'N' sub? Thanks!
By the way, if I7m gonna do this right, would you mind
telling me the
catagories I have to roll for? I kinda forgot them (I played
D&D once a few
years ago..) And also, so all the characters start out with the same
basic
stuff - meaning gold, equipment, potions etc.?

Well, D&D and AD&D on this system
are pretty much equal; I'm merely
referring to the subject correctly. The stats you must roll for are:
Strength,
Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Charisma, and
Comeliness. All
save Comeliness are rolled using 4d6 (six-sided dice) and ignoring the
lowest
roll. For Comeliness you roll 3d6 and take the result. There are certain
bonuses and penalties depending on Charisma and race that are too
complicated
to get into right now. Characters start off with differing amounts of
gold.
They are supposed to buy what equipment they want with their gold, but
that's
kinda too complicated unless you have a copy of the Player's Handbook.
For
basic equipment most people have a backpack, rations, drinks, rope,
torches,
belts & belt pouches, tinderboxes, sacks, armor, clothes
(cloaks, robes,
etc.), and so on. OK? I'll let ya pretty much have whatever mundane
equipment
ya want.

Well, i think i've pretty much run out of grusome accounts, except for
one that
always struck me as rather chilling.
During the French revolution (and, oh, didn't they do it just perfect
as the
French think they do everything? Just not first...)
it was an honored
position, and a lucky one, to be first in line for execution on the
guillotine(sp?).
The blade, being the most important part of the device, was always
taken home
by a person in position, usually to be cleaned and sharpened...
As after the first, second, third, and fourth chop (through all the
flesh,
cartlidge, and bone) the blade tended to get pretty dull, requiring
them to
pull the blade up (slowly as it was heavey) and let it down once more
on the
half-neck-chopped victim below.
Some accounts have them bringing the blade down as much as 7 times.
And they said it was a good death...

Subject: [AD&D game] - Reply to # 223
AD&D and D&D are two different
games, but for our purposes, they are the
same; Derec and I mean the same thing. There is only one fantasy
role-playing
game going on and you can call it either one but technically it is
AD&D.
The difference between Wisdom and Intelligence is
that Intelligence is,
well, intellect and how smart you are. Wisdom is common sense and will
power.
Characters with higher Intelligences know more languages and have
greater
chances of understanding spells if they're a magic-using class.
Characters
with high Wisdom aren't as easily affected by charms and mental attacks.
Clerical classes with high Wisdom also get bonus spells.
And yes, Charisma and Comeliness are basically
only good for picking up
babes (and/or dudes). A high Charisma means a person has a high
leadership
potential, while not necessarily looking good (example: Hitler).
Charisma can
also affect encounters for better or worse.
Yes, you can reroll your character if you don7t
like the original. However,
it will still have to pass my standards.

Oh, that reminds me! I once read a book on modern legends, or
tales.
You've all probably heard this quaint, purely horrible, and untrue
tales at
some point in your organic life in the Great Land of Plastic and Big
Money.
(Yes, just think, those plastic styro-foam BigMac cartons will stay
just as
pretty as they were when you first bought it, for thousands of
years! The
marvels of plastic, eh?!)
Back to Modern Myths... There was this lady, she finished her
Pepsi (i like
Coke over Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper the best out of 'em all...) and noticed
the
can was still heavey. She shakes it up and down.
<Thump -- Thump> it goes in
side. "What IS inside of this!?!?!" A dead,
partially carbonated rat.
You know those factories, lord only knows what scurries about the
assembly line
at 12am! Now, imagine digesting a drink with a whole rate
corpse in it.
Or, and this is older, the story about the fur jacket. Young
girl rips it

Ok, picture this:
Your 8th in line (were late getting up, a pile of straw on a floor of
human
fecse mixed with the smell of vitamin deffecient urine combines to make
quite
a relaxing night sleep believe it or not)... Anyway, you're
the 8th in line
to have your head disconnected from your head. Why?
Well, humanity just
perceived you as a purely unproductive human in the current scheme of
things.
A pretty fair reason.
Its your turn! You're so excited your sweating like a convict
about to step
into the electric chair! You climb the stair, they push you
down to the floor
("geez, didn't have to be so pushy about it") You eagrly
place your neck in
the stock, you even push down the top of it closing it shut (its a good
Christian ethic to be helpful, mom's words right till the end!)
Next thing you`know they're putting your haÎd into locked
stocks, and strapping
a heavey leather belt about your torso. You find this quite
peculair, seeing
you're looking forward to the new experience. But, you can
excuse their
enthusiaism since this is a new position of power for them due to the
"Glorious Revolution."
The blade comes down... OUCH! Well, at least you
can't feel anything but your
face. The world seems funny to, instead of only being able to
look at the
floor boards, the crowd is now visible through the blood running into
your
eyes and down your nostrils....
Now, what's happening to you is this: The blade, on its first
drop, only cut
halfway. revealing several veins, the spinal cord, perhaps
the lower half of
the brain if he twisted wrong before the impact, and undoubtedly a few
grey
coloured muscle tissue.
If your lucky you won't spasmastically start coughing due to all the
blood
running down your nose before the blade finished the job on the 2nd
drop.

Yes, it was a Nova, that's right!
Boy, that was a fun night. Rolling down that hill toward the

remember
what we were discussing, did we!)... "Gee, the lights

"Yes, XXX, yes, i think that would've been a good idea.
Funny, my door won't
open. Think that might be because the front end of your car
is mushed into
the side of that white cadilac three feet from our faces?"
Too bad Leo's tape did't make the voyage from the back seat to the
dashboard,
and oh, how i did love Peter Gabriel's "Shock The Monkey"!

Aproximately 2 decades ago the arab confederacy, no matter how loose,
disorganized, and technologically and culturally behind, declared that
the
destruction of the "Zionist Regime" lay in the near future.
Meanwhile, Israel pleaded with the USNA and UN to mediate the
situation, and
work out a system of mutual survival and benefit for Israel and the arab
tribes. But, to no response.
It was Shabbat, Friday evening more precisely. The arab
forces, Jordan, Syria,
and Egpyt mostly, crossed Israeli borders, over ran kibbutzim and other
unarmed settelments with tanks and troops.
Within hours the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) had halted the
insurection of the
arab forces. By day break they were driving the arab forces
back over the
boarders and following them into the soverign states of their homelands
to
acquire startigic positions for future defense.
In 6 Days Israel had, literally, more than doubeled the land under their
possesion. The Golan Heights (where i was located while on
kibbutz Dafna),
Samaria & Judea (known in the US as the West Bank), the Gaza
Strip, and the
Sinai District were the gained territories.
Golan Heights: annexed in 1976.
Judea & Samaria: slowly being transformed into an
active, peace loving
district
Gaza Strip: A strip of sand of mere stratigic purpose, and
maybe one day good
factory land
Sinai District: offered as a kind gift to the Egyptians in an
effort to allow
them to almost forget their bitter and reality-bringing defeat.

6) Gnome (Surface or Deep)

17) Thief-Acrobat
18) Witch *
Those with a "*" next to them are rather unique to

Incantatrixes are
powerful in magic but weak in combat. Witches cast many spells and have

Since you never lose points when you die, kill yourself as soon as you

She said
she was going to sleep on it, so he'd know today, I think.
In case there is one, might I ask you a
teensy-weensy favor? Seeing as how
Raynham is convenientaly right between Bridgewater and Taunton, might
you see
fit to pick me up along the way? Otherwise transportation is quite
unwilling
to do much for me in getting me over there.
Aqualung also has plans for The New Late Night,
which might be up next week
if he's lucky. He's currently working on it, but with work and his
girlfriend
and all... Apparently it's going to combine the best features of C-Net

C-Net 12 (?) with little or no waiting, which tends to
discourage some people
from the larger subs. Have you noticed the general slump of activity

Whatever happened to nice, wholesome games for nice, red-cheeked
children?
Are there no such games in existence anymore?
Or, are there no such children?
Ever notice how the kids on Campbell Soupcans have changed? I
think this is
evidence to support the former.
There's nothing like a good game of Kick The Can. Why, when i
was a kid (and
yes, we had real red cheeks back then, from running around, not
sniffing glue)
we used to play kick the can for hours and hours. Geez, so
much fun, hunting
down each other with axes and hand made spears.
But, times have changed... And the children have become lazy,
skinny or fat,
and have resorted to doing such things only in their heads.
Come on! Get out there and DO don't THINK these things.
You'd be surprised how much fun you can have in just one day!

<On a sidenote, Charles Bukowski, author of 'Great Poets Die In
Steaming Pots
of Sh*t', a truly original modern poet, suggested that the government
released
LSD and television to the public accessibility in order to keep our
minds off
our cruel, grey reality. Colorful, flashing non-reality is
really much more
pleasant. We are provided with an alternative to trying to
improve our world,
which would necessitate removing many powerful officials....A slightly
incoherent sidenote.>
Literature, though, keeps the mind active _and_ presents us with greater
dimension and order/beauty/emotion than "real" life. I don't
believe that
literary experiences are much less intense than "real" life ones, but
they are
weak enough that we can see a murder without being traumatized
(emotionally
disturbed, etc) as we would by witnessing a "real" one, and still we
can see
how terrible murder is. I'm thinking about Shakespeare plays,
yes...but
seeing with the mind's eye can be just as effective as seeing them
performed.
"The third dimension hides itself", as another poet (forgotten who)
wrot
One more thing. According to scholars, the point of showing
grotesque scenes
in good drama is to _sharpen our sensibilities_. I agree with
this. As I
said above, we see how terrible crimes are without having to learnm
about them
by direct experience. However, what about the innumnerable
murders shown in
the dead teenager movies such as 'Friday the Thirteenth', can those be
regarded in the same way? I wouldn't expect so, and yet I
haven't found any
strong differences between them and the ones in artistically
respectable films
(the murders themselves, the nature of the crimes are greatly
different).

I realize a lot of this mustn't make much sense,
but whatever you need
explained, I'll do so. I'll start with your statistics.
All attributes are measured from 3 (the worst) to
18 (the best). With an 8
Strength you're slightly below average, but won't suffer any penalties.
An 18
Intelligence means you are a certifiable genius. When you progress
enough, you
will be able to use the most powerful magics. An 11 Wisdom means you're
about
average in common sense and willpower. A 16 Dexterity means you're
light on
your feet and quite agile; you get a bonus of -2 on your armor class
(the
lower the better). A 15 Constitution means you're quite healthy and in
good
shape; consequently you get 1 extra hit point whenever you go up a level
(magic-users receive 1-4 hit points per level). A 9 Charisma means
you're dead
average in leadership. A 12 Comeliness means you're average in looks.
While no
Quasimodo, you're not exactly Don Juan either.
I'll explain more later when I have more time, OK?

Subject: [Hit points, experience points, and armor class]
Well, since Derec doesn't seem to be around, I'll
explain some more.
Hit points reflect how much damage you can take
before dying. 18 hit points
aren't that much; a longsword does a base 1-8 hp damage, so you'd do
well to
surround yourself with armored fighters. As you go up in levels, your
hit
points go up as well. Magic-users get 1-4 hit points per level, about
the
least of the classes.
Armor class reflects how easy or difficult it is
for you to be hit by
weapons. An armor class of 2 is pretty respectable; it's equal to
someone
wearing plate mail armor. The reason it's 4 in back is because you
don't get
the Dexterity bonus cuz you don't have eyes in the back of your head
and can't
see what's going on back there. AC 10 is an unarmored person, while -20
is a
virtual walking tank.
Experience points are gained by killing monsters
and getting treasure. Each
monster is worth a different amount depending on how easy or difficult
it was
to kill. One gold piece acquired as treasure is equal to 1 experience
point.
You need a total of 40,000 experience points to advance to the next
level.
I hope this makes things a bit clearer.

Yes, the BBS I mentioned (The Sanctuary, <805>687-1075,
300/1200/2400 baud) is
out here. Locally, there are only about fifteen Atari BBSers,
but there are
two (soon to be three) Atari systems.
Have you heard of the Abaq? This machine has graphics that
make the Mac II
really look primtive...its speed is considerably better than the Mac
II's 16
Mhz., also. Unfortunately, Atari hasn't completed it yet, but
it is past the
_vapourware_ stage.
Only Ataris contain _wetware_, though. Every Mega
ST has a microthin, frozen
slice of Alfred E.'s cortex, which replaces the old 68000
microprocessors of
the lesser STs (wrong to call them _lessers_, of course...they're all
supreme
beings with circuit behavior based on Cunfucian ethics).

Frumpy: Of the two choices you gave, I'd chose 'snot'.
Monosyllables have
always appealed to me more than larger words.
Frumpism: I think being removed from the earth and placed in any other
civilized world, without any fellow earthlings, would be too great a
shock for
me to endure. Unless, with the alien's super-sophisticated
medical
technology, they could remedy my inability to adapt. If I had
to abandon
earth culture entirely, there would, I say with conviction, be nothing
to
prevent me from compete and utter insanity...leading inevitably to
suicide.
How could I give up Russian literature, or Dante? (Fatal
nostalgia, probably.
I don't think any other art, regardless of how developed, could fulfill
my
need for Max Ernst and the others.) On the more mundane
side, I'm addicted
to Camel filters.
Robertovitchsky: After reading about ten typically satisfying messages
from
you, I confess I don't really know where to begin. I'll
comment on several
outstanding points in my memory. Continue on whichever of
these you like.
Don't you agree with the Confucianist views that if we treat people
like thugs,
or undesirables, they'll (unless they've got Walt Disney's self-esteem
and
emotional shock absorbers) become that, and if you treat thugs as
sensitive,
socially acceptable beings, they'll become that? Are my chips
malfunctioning
when they tell me that this is one of the several things Confusianism
has in
common with Christianity, the belief that you 'ought' to treat people
as you
would like them to be? (Of course, this can't always be
applied. If you
treat a retardate [real word!] like a Stephen Hawking, or a genius,
you're
liable to frustrate him terribly.)
Does the Bible really state that if God says something, it's
logical? That can

That's probably figurative, and my guess would be that the Bible is
telling us
that essentially everything that God says is law (not in the sense of
legality). This is one superiority I see in Taoism -- it
contains no such
claims, and also tells us that ethics (such as Confucianism, which
provided
most of these for the older Taoists) should not be followed rigorously,
taht
this will lead to restriction, and even faulty responses, since in
devising a
system of ethics, even Kung Fu Tzu (Confucius) couldn't have considered
enough
morally confusing situations to make a perfect (for all time)
code. My main
complaint against this thinking (God's word = law) is that the world
changes
too much for something said thousands of years ago to still be
applicable in
nearly as many cases as it was _then_. Just how worldly was
Jesus?
Presumably, he was _other_wordly_ in addition, but did he display
knowledge of
any cultures other than that he was brought up in? (Detailed
references, I
mean.) I realize that changes are made in Christianity, and
that we have
priests and trained interpretors of the bible to guide us.
But doesn't the
fact that they're all so earthy (opposed to divine) vitiate their
thoughts on
texts so divine as the Bible? We claim no real change in the
organisims of
preists, do we? If not, what prevents a wise non-religious
man from making
equally good judgements? What gives the trained Bible student
better insight
than the intelligent and learned ordinary Christian, according to your
knowledge of teh church? Does the fact he's been through
formal training
allow him to make better judgements? That right there
presumes some
superhuman characteristics in him, since all men are equally
susceptible to
mistakes in thinking. Is it just that the church _Uppers_
believe trained
students of teh Bible are _generally_ more correct? (Is it

In S.B. telecom, there are two Christians who incessantly tell other
users
_more_ than we want to know about their faith. One is a
normally employed
man, and the other a (authentic) Catholic priest. They both
bore me to death
with their loquacity, but the former has _exceptional_ ability with
dialectics. None of the arguments he's considered extensively
have been
out-done in debate, and his understanding of his own personal beliefs is
extraordinary. (I have complaints about his basic thinking,
of course, and he
does try to escape certain points at time...) This person
clearly has a
better understanding of Christianity and philosophy in general than the
priest. The question I've drifted towards is Are priests
authoritative? If
not, what has kept Christianity so _the same_ throughout history, in
fact so
much less altered than other equally (there's a bit you might not
consider
correct) complete religions, such as Taoism?
Anyway, this is longer than I expected, so just one more thought
string.
Laura, you claimed that you don't have a psychic need for
God. I believe
what Robert figuratively stated (I may be wrong...didn't even read teh
message
you were replying to) was that everyone has a psychic need for a
_higher_power_, not necessarily God as He's usually conceived in the
Western
world. I compeltely agree with this. If you don't
have such a need, then why
do you have a higher power? You do -- though I'm not sure
whether it's
television, your parents, or what. I think what characterizes
_higher_power_
as I mean it from anything more pwoerful than yourself is your faith in
it:
your trust where you shouldn't logically trust it.

Subject: Since religious discussions are suddenly so popular here...
Anselm's "Proof" of God's existence is something along these lines.
"God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived."
From what I've experienced (admittedly not a whole lot), all people
agree that
God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. In short,
nothing greater can
be conceived. (If it can be, what is greater than God?
[Please don't tell me
jokingly "Technology!"]) If he does not exist, then he is not "that
than which
nothing greater can be conceived", since he lacks existence.
Thus, we have a
hopeless contradiction, for "that than which nothing greater cannot be
conceived" is not "that than which nothing greater can be conceived".
"Therefore, something than which a greater cannot be conceived so truly
is that
it is impossible even to conceive of it as not existing."
He concludes that it is impossible for us to conceive of God not
existing,
which most people would contradict nowadays. Anyone who would
contradict him
while believing God has these three _omnis_ is automatically
wrong.
There are severe problems with his ideas, but I'll get to them later.

What you say about reading is true.
However, i can't find the merit in experiencing something such as a
murder with
it filtered enough so that one can recognize its brutality, stupidity,
and

Firstly, i think the trauma is a major part of that which adds to such
recognitions. And secondly, reality seldom damages a healthy

What you said about reading, is as i said, very true. It
offers us an
opportunity to experience some incredible things through the
perceptions or
imaginations of others.
But, it can be an unhealthy practice. Reading can act as a
crutch, an escape
from reality. I think this is wrong, as it has some of the
same unproductive
affects as TV or drugs.
Something i noticed recently was that the more complex the world
becomes the
less depressed we get. Meaning, when you are in a foreign
country the sights,
sounds, etc. appear very complex, make you constantly aware.
The less complex our suroundings (familiar streets, houses, rooms) the
more
depressed we can become, as we are forced to examine our thoughts
rather than
our environment. We turn in rather than out in our attentions.
But, it can be said that if one's environment is constantly complex,
the mind
becomes tired, irratable, and eventually depressed. Many
travelers to Egypt,
where one is CONSTANTLY bombarded with musuems, tombs, temples, etc.
become
depressed after awhile, sometimes leading to nervous breakdowns.
And it can also be said that familiar surroundings can offer comfort and
pleasure. Nothing like comming home after a long long
trip. Or in sitting
down in your room after a day at work or school.
I believe a constant mixture of both the complex and unfamiliar with
the simple
and familiar is the best mixture of reality.
Be stimulated, but be casual about it.

Yes, i do think that how you treat others does have a STRONG force in

have a weak
affect in less self aware people (which is what i would favor to be at

I've seen this in myself. Teachers, bosses,

this with age, i hope, but hopefully not through decreasing my

[God's Word]
The Messiah during his last visit to the planet stated Himself: "Test
everything." I agree with this. Test everything,
especially that which
claims to be truth! The Word of God has come to be called
that because it has
come to be known as the truth by men in the past. But, this
is no excuse for
us to remain lazy and not try it out for ourselves. I did,

[The Students of Scriptures]
I don't think the preist, theological student, or nunn locked away in

Canada has any monopoly on Truth or Love. Many religions have
bits of truth

Truth is universal and absolute and nature. All have access

Being one who endevours to join the ranks of biblical studies i believe

Anyone who goes into reading the teachings of the Messiah shouldn't
expect to

He should
expect to know more about the interaction of God with humanity, and
more about
God's plan for himself and others.
Hopefully the student of bible is such because he seeks these things,

[Preits]
A priest should only act as a guidpost, as a highway of easier travel,
for the
believer. He is not THE WORD OF GOD. He does not
have any monopoly on God.
He can't forgive your sins, only you through Christ to God can do
that. A

We exist in a universe of the finite. Therefore, a belief in
God is
contradictory to an animalistic nature in this universe.
But, man is not an animal, but has an extra quality, a quality that
wonders and
seeks to create these wonders. This is our reason for a
belief in a god.
A belief in god is not acheived through study of biology, physics,
chemistry,
or anything. For all of these things brings up un answerable
questions that,
with some work, can be answered in time.
A belief in God comes from intervention, grace, those rare moments when
the
solid walls of our solid, infinite Universe briefly mix with a higher
nature,
another universe other than our own. That's the foundation of
faith in
others. The catalyst being communication between the species.
Belief in God isn't logical. Because it goes beyond
it. Its like saying, "run
the track! but while you're running think of what it would
look like to run
from the opposite direction of the track."

Did you know Atari bought out the Federated chain? They now
control over 40
stores in California, Arizona, Washington, and two or three other
states.
This will be like Radio Shack to the Tandy company, and a great
convenience
for Atari owners (in these Wetern states). You know, a 520 ST
color system
costs less than an Amiga 500, and probably the only way in which the
Como-dores are superior is in graphics...which advantage is a very
small one.
Plus, Atari is vastly more supportive of their customers than the Commie
builders. There are several multi-user, Atari _owned_ BBSs
scattered across
teh country which have all the new public domain releases in their
D/load
sections, in addition to information sections. Also, a couple
of Atari
magazines (such as ST X-Press) have their own BBSs.
Did you know that the ST is the fastest (and least expensive) Unix
clone?
Newly released Idris (going for about $800) enables the ST to run most
Unix
stuff...Magic Sac MacIntosh cloning package lets the ST run Mac
software very
well, and from what I've heard PC Ditto enables STers to use IBM junk
fairly
well. I really doubt there'll be much more support for the 8
bits. In fact,
once Abaq is released, and everyone begins buying the Mega STs, even
the 520
and the 1040 will begin losing attention. Of course, this is
teh same with ll
computer companies. After the Mac II finds its way into
standard market
popularity, fewer and fewer stores will carry stuff for disgusting old
Apple

For example, I am well aware how wasteful and cruel homicide
is. I've never
witnessed one, nor have any of my relatives or friends been

realization comes solely from dramatic literature, and theatric

bring them to this understanding. You imply, then, that
everyone who sees
murder as we see it has been traumatized by such an experience at least
once?
That strikes me as _slightly_ ridiculous. Certainly the
people who have
witnessed it, or who have nearly been murdered, are even more aware
than I of
how terrible it is, yet they are no less likely to kill than I
am. And in
fact, people who are traumatized in such a way are often more likely to
kill
than those who haven't.

Oh, I know that reading can be used as an escape. I've been
using it in such a
way since I was thirteen years old. I vehemently disagree
with you that
reading can make people less able to deal with reality, only unless they
replace reality with literature. In escaping with writing,
which I do for at
least an hour every day, I really don't miss much, and learn far more
than I
can fro ordinary life in Santa Barbara. It is an escape
_in_addition_to_
resource, and a source of relaxation. Oh k...I
could agree that reading
trash fiction (Douglas Adams? [!], common erotica, etc.) could be
well-nigh as
deleterious as a life in a sleazy movie house. Anyone who is
escaping into
those literary worlds is losing out on a lot. At any rate, I
maintain that
reading good literature cannot be unhealthy to the mind, unless someone
abandons the ugly outside world to explore it.
I know what you mean, I agree on those points about
familiarity. All
non-stagnant beings are constantly searching for new outside
experience.
However, we can draw infinitely from one environment, provided we keep
changing our _internal_ environment. I'm sure I could have
developed equally
well if I had been born in Halifax, Ma, and had never left
Mass. For most
people this isn't true, probably...but it's our external and internal
environments we're living in.
The Vietnam prisoners of war saw virtually no outside changes, some of
them
being kept for almost (maybe even) a full decade. What they
did was use their
mind as their main source of stimulation.

with our
animalistic tendencies.
Man is essentially an animal, but possesses the ability to form high
order
abstractions. Hence, religious beliefs.
A belief in God is cannot be defended with sciences, therefore all
religious
beliefs cannot be superior to superstition.
Belief in God comes from the inability of science to explain our (often
faulty)
perceptions adn experiences adequately. Our need (not
everyone has this need,
of course) to explain what we see, treated with our creativity, gives
us God.
When we no longer need Zeus to explain lightning, he loses
importance. When
we no longer need the Genesis to explain the creation of the universe,
we look
upon it as mere writing...unless we worship words. When we no
longer need Pat
Robertson to explain bizarre metiorology, he'll drop out of the
race...;-)
Belief in God isn't logical because logical systems are based on
sensible
reality, and God (common meaning) isn't in sensible reality.
As Bertrand
Russell told us, "Uncertainty is a virtue." Few people are willing to
live
with uncertainty, and their own ignorance. Hence science, and
since that's
still incomplete, hence religion. (Robert, I can imagine you
after reading
'few people are willing to live with uncertainty, and their own
ignorance'
wondering how I could have missed seeing the 95 percenters, the ones
who view
the gathering of information thus: "Duh, that's stupid, why do you sit
around
reading when you can be out getting drunk and sex?"
Uncertainty is only a
virtue among teh many self-declared college students, and proud egoist
"intellectuals". Meaning, people much too quickly try to
answer. Even Kung
Fu

Kung Fu Tzu (Confucius), when asked to talk about God, said "I'd rather
not
speak." I think _generally_ the people who are the wisest
preach far less
than the ones who've just learned to think and talk simultaneously.)
Let me explain some of that. First, the major religions are
vastly superior to
mere supersitions in their ethical systems, the history, art, etc. that
goes
along with them. Otherwise, there isn't much difference from
a scientific
point of view. Of course I agree that they aren't to be
approached
scientifically or logically. Imagine trying to learn about
Taoism while being
a math student! I do believe, though, that for the most part
belief in a
traditional, anthropomorphic God is as unacceptable as believing about
black
cats crossing paths. Therefore, Taoism and other Eastern
religions are much
more acceptable to me than Western ones....I do believe in a
divine being. To
explain the first part of that last message I wrote, we base
explanations on
what we know. When we know little, our theories are usually
faulty. But
still, we stand by them until they completely collapse.
Obstinacy is seen in
men as it is in animals.
Something else that I was wondering about your personal beliefs,
Robert. Do
you believe the utterance of words can invoke some magic, or can
control in a
certain way some divine energy? Such as prayer?
Some Christians seem to, and
this, considering all sacred Christian texts are in Latin, seems utterly
ridiculous.

You mentioned you are seeking teh "complete truth about
life". Could you
expand on this a little? Not on your journeys (though that
could be
interesting...) but more on teh character of this "complete truth".
Oh k. So even teh Bible isn't to Christians necessarily
authoritative. But
isn't it true that other Christians are more likely to trust your
beliefs if
tehy're more in keeping with the Bible, and isn't this reason to deny
your
actual learnings, if you're the sort to try to please others with your
personal ideas? Of course. So, a necessary
ingredient in a person of real
learning (or one who's to become truly learned) is a lack of _complete_
respect of his ancestor's, or mentor's, learnings. Therefore,
wouldn't it be
correct to say that Bible worshippers are never truly
learned? Of course, no
one who bases his life on someone else's experince of _his_ (the
latter's) is
going to be truly in accord with himself.

If Robert Adams suddenly got turned into a waflle would it
really make a

dead.. Would the world's populace drop everything and cry out in pain
because
they had lost thier 'Builder'.. I think Not.. I think all that it would
amount
to is a three line space in the national enquirer between 'Girl

I heard the other day on a major talk show that Infocom games and other
adventure/script ridden games have caused millions of kids to mollest
their
little sisters and brother, and rape their grandmothers (the ones
living in
thier kids' homes wasting way) in some instances.
Horrible! Absolutely
horrible.

Well, you're standing on sneakers (yes, those generic white hightops)
that were
devised by a team of thinkers.
You are learning only English as a primary language and not English
& Japanese
as Federal Languages due to a team of thinkers that built the weapon
that won
WWII (a war we almost lost).
And me? What have i done?
I got you to ask that question... Which is the most
constructive thing you've
done in telecom since i can remember (since i've been in telecom,
beginning
about 1980).
Thanks for your response!

The mental sensations one gets in actually seeing a murder as opposed to
someone who remotely (reading, photos, TV, etc.) experiences
mostly likely do
cause that person to be more inclined to murder.
Agreed. I don't believe i
stated otherwise.
But, i stated that i don't seen MERIT in explicitely reading/viewing a
murder
from remote experience. It tends to desensitize the person to
the act MORE SO
i think. For in such a realm consequence is some how lost.
How often we hear about someone in an accident who is brain damaged,
and say to
ourselves "better if they die, for the family, etc..." But,
after you
experience the loss of a person, a TOTAL LOSS, you don't find yourself
saying
that. And when you do, you usually stop yourself and really
think about the
actual consequences, the full consequence.

Subject: Reading escapes - Reply to # 416
Oh, of course there is literature that is useful, additive, and
productive to
our lives, and that also can be enjoying, relaxing, et all.
But, as you said, when that TOOL is misused to a point where the
outside world
(beautiful or ugly) is abandoned or nearly neglected it is a misused
tool, and
becomes a crutch, if not a severe handicap.
Music, books, computers, your cat, your wife, should all be enrichments
of our
world, not a world in themselves. Our world is our only
chance in this life
to create a working model of our dreams, thus far no other device
allows this
to such a complete extent. Until that time, we have no higher
choices than to
create and fool around with this world. Its not just a
choice, a challenge,
or convincing game, but our responsobility.
Every moment you continue to live (physicaly) in this world you are
saying you
choose to be a player. But, when you withdraw in these
escapes you are
reneging on your commitment to other players, AND using up resources
that
could be better used by an active player.

Subject: Lotsa things, but one... - Reply to # 417
You discussed quite a few things, but one i found interesting.
There is, as you said, a whole HUGE population that loves uncertainity
to a
very strong degree. Uncertainity within themselves, with
their role in the
scheme of things.
A person who continiously attends parties (and i have met people that
are
actually nomadic in their lifestyle, attending party after party each
night...
its VERY weird, and sick) and think nothing of who they are, or what
they are.
Look at a party for example. And average HS party.
Its FILLED with
uncertainity. That's the whole basis of the thing, to wallow
in that which HS
is made up of... Uncertainity. What is the purpose
of the party? Of the
dancing? Of the drinking? Of the small
talk? Of the sex in the bathroom?
("What are you stupid? Its to have a good-time!!!!)
Bullshit. Minus perhaps
the sex, and that isn't even really enjoying taking into account how
most of
them view it and go about it.
There are many, many people with lives of uncertainity. If
they truly don't
enjoy it, then perhaps they are too lazy or scared to do anything about
it.

I don't believe this world invokes any intellectual need for a
god. Matter of
fact, i think this world is specifically designed to be neutral in
terms of
the whole thing. The world says "its all finite" and then
says "its all
infinite." "Look, a rock is rock. Its there, and
there are only so many
rocks in the world." or "Look at the
rock. Look at the molecules. Look at
the atoms. Look at the quarks. Look at the...."
There is no need for a god.
There is always a need for a god.
As to words and the metaphysical. No. I don't
believe a series of sounds has
any importance in the supernatural realm than does the banging of paper
and
rock together. I do believe that what the spirit says,
expressed through
words, and thus strengthening its power within ourselves, does have
signfigance.
Its what's on the inside that is heard, not what's said.

Indeed, respect for the assumed and accepted without personal
understanding is
unholy and foolish.
The complete truth i seek is, is to seek what is Reality. I
want to know
what's going on here, and what;s going on over there behind the
scenes. For
both sides are inseperable in effects.
("Mystic Rythems")
One thing which i've come to despise to a very large degree are
believers that
believe without thinking. How valuable are they to
God? They are no better
than a man that believe his neighbor is Another Messiah because the guy
claims
to have come directly from Heaven.
Let there be no Fools of God.
Just Men of God.

Umm.. Jesuit times? Was that during the Jesuit's
Order?
During JESUS's TIME... Yes, the place wasn't a happy
place. It was an
occupied land, called palastine. There were occasional
disturbances, and
several illegal revolutionary groups.
Matter of fact. One of his disciples was a member of
one. Judas (the one that
sold him for a bag of silver to the priests). Jesus was very
much against
rebellion. "Give to Caeser what is Caeser's, and God's to
God."
Many tried to push Jesus into becomming a figure head for the planned
rebellion
(which happened sometime after his crucifiction).
The time of Jesus's ministry on Earth and now are very much the
same. Very
much, just a bit worse (we're covering the whole earth now).
